TRUE-UP BLUES

What’s a Solar True-Up Bill?

When you go solar, your home is still connected to the utility grid. Each month, your utility tracks how much energy your system produces and how much your home uses.

Most utilities don’t charge you right away — they keep a running total of energy credits and usage for the entire year. At the end of that 12-month cycle, they “true up” the balance.

That True-Up Bill is your annual statement showing:

  1. How much energy you produced vs. used,

  2. How many credits you earned or owed, and

  3. The total balance due for any extra power you pulled from the grid.

Why It Can Be So High?

Even if your solar panels seem to be working fine, several hidden issues can cause your true-up bill to spike:

  • Dirty panels reducing efficiency

  • Faulty wiring or bad inverter performance

  • Increased home usage (new appliances, EVs, A/C, etc.)

  • Outdated monitoring or system not reporting properly
